DDL claims that as of october 15th OSKR is released. In my opinion that is not really true, since so far the only thing you can do with an installed OSKR firmware is to ssh into the robot and snoop around in the Yocto Linux filesystem running on Vector.
There are quite some things missing:
- The robot’s source code
- Detailed documentation how everything works (so far we only got a documentation to install the OSKR OTA)
- Development tools used in coding for Yocto/Vector, developing animations and doing other things without the need to hack
- Access to locked proprietary code and binaries
So in my opinion only a part of OSKR is released and seeing the myriads of problems people have in getting an OSKR OTA onto their robots (depending on OS, hardware and Bluetooth implementation to connect to the robot in the first place) I would say this is only a partial release and more of an early beta.
Sure, there are already people reverse-engineering the unlocked robot and that has yielded first results, but that is not what OSKR promised. What DDL promised was a way to develop new features for Vector and that can and should only be done with a concise documentation and proper tools. For example: In past videos of Anki an animation tool was seen to create eye animations, another tool was able to create movement animations. Tools like these are neccessary to really make use of OSKR. Open Source Kit for Robots is the name, so far the backers do not have that kit, we only have a (partially) unlocked Vector via an OSKR OTA. The low-level scrutinizing that is done at the moment is more hacking than developing. For development we need proper tools.
yep, I have held back from buying in to developed till I saw what was on offer.
A unlock code not enough for me,
The robot’s source code
Detailed documentation
Development tools used in coding for Yocto/Vector, developing animations, and doing other things without the need to hack
Access to locked proprietary code and binaries
Would be minimum for over 100 UK pounds
Completely agree. DDL has done a sham of a release by claiming they have delivered OSKR. This was not everyone paid for.
